the other day my sister-in-law asked me- "have you ever heard of marshmallow fondant?" No I hadn't!
when i looked it up, I found this tutorial (aren't her cakes amazing?) and got so excited about making fancy cakes. I actually dreamt about cakes all night. I make fancy cakes exactly three times a year (for the kids' birthdays- although i'd love to make more- here are a few of my favourites- bee hive, tv dinner, castle) I thought i'd have to wait until Lee's birthday to indulge myself, but then i remembered i had already said I'd make a cake for the Red Party I was to attend. Yay! (you may have seen this cake in that post a few days ago...)
i tried to make this cake actually red, but i ran out of food colouring (!!)
i had the idea to make poppies to cover the cake, but as i was still mixing in the food colouring a half hour before i had to go i gave up on that idea. hearts seemed both simple enough and appropriate!
two things i'll add to the otherwise great tutorial i referenced:
-if you are doing all one colour, or shades of a colour- add the food colouring while the mix is still melted. it took forever to knead it in.
-stop and let the mixture sit before you think it might be ready- i found after it cooled? set? i had added too much powdered sugar and the fondant was too dry.
it was super fun and i can't wait until next week when i can make a cake for Lee's birthday!
